Thermal-fused or heat applied systems essentially fuse the seams of roofing material membranes together to create a strong, impermeable bond. Modified Bitumen roofing systems were traditionally installed using a propane torch to melt the sheets of membranes together. Hot-air welding uses air instead of an open flame to achieve the same results.
Hot-air welding is also typically associated with thermoplastic roofing material such as PVC and TPO. These products are usually made of a thicker material than those designed for cold applied systems.
